“Now The Seats Are All Empty, Let the Roadies Take the Stage!” – STAY/THE LOAD OUT – JACKSON BROWNE FINDS SERENITY: Tempo Analysis of An Irate Man Toward World Suffering, But a Man at Home in his Own Skin

Looking out at the road rushing under his wheels, Jackson Where-are-they-now-file Browne turned to the television. He sees: what to Mr. Browne is a sullying, a perversion, and as he said, a “rape” of one of his songs, or at least a section therefrom. Why “rape”? Because Former Prisoner-Of-War Senator John McCain had DARED to use a part of a 30-year old song on a television commercial. Mr. Browne, the singer, composer, political activist, master of the falsetto, and, most importantly, “Mr. Anti-Nuclear Power” is a liberally leaning man who was famous for a lot more than 15 minutes.

Here, I try to figure out his rage at Senator McCain. McCain. I thought: this is awful, a man with the vegan-itude, niceness (or “kindness” as Mr. Browne prefers) and monthly visits to *international* PETA meetings, is containing hidden ANGER directed at a former prisoner of war who fought on HIS side, but not, such as, at the millions of people who have his music through theft, the meat-eating carnivorous humans and all the killed tomatoes that go into ketchup which goes on that same meat – or even the people who spread unsubstantiated rumor about his sex life, that he would go running into a court of law screaming ‘STOP RUINING MY REPUTATION!!!!!!! Give me money – no – I want UNSPECIFIED PUNITIVE DAMAGE MONEY, BABY! NO CHUMP CHANGE!’ It is a mystery indeed how this man of passive-aggressive fame, now an old shell of his famed self, like Madonna, re-invented a bitter old version of his laid-backness. “You take Sally, I’ll take Sue, There ain’t no difference between the two, cocaine, running all around [Jackson Browne]‘s brain” was a lyric that had led me to believe that since cocaine is an illegal poison and wife swapping is still a thing that is a contradiction in terms that Mr. Browne would be all free-speech. Like: Hey McCain, take this NEW SONG!!! Nope. When you (or me) reach Mr. Browne’s age, we do not write new popular songs anymore (they write songs, they just are not popular -you can ask James “J.T.” Taylor about that) nor do we want to be making public spectacles of ourselves this way, so let’s have a look at what went down, what is going down, and, of course, prevent any more “damages.”

According to the meanspeed music conjecture, the song under analysis, “The Load Out/Stay” falls under the mean-emotion of comfort. Browne emotes the clarity of his natural role as a road performer – extolling his natural gifts that only he has. As Browne asserts in the song, “Now the seats are all empty let the roadies take the stage pack it up and tear it down they’re the first to come and the last to leave working for that minimum wage and they’ll set it up in another town They’ll set it up in another town tonight the people were so fine they waited there in line and when they got up on their feet they made the show and that was sweet–but I can hear the sound of slamming doors and folding chairs and that’s a sound [YOU'LL] never know.”

Now, to me it seemed odd that the use of this song should bring about such ire for Browne that he would file suit against Republican candidate for president John McCain for “unspecified damages.” I am an attorney, and in my less than Atticus Finch career, I still know two things straightaway:

1) BROWNE has lost millions of dollars from illegal downloading, mostly by the left-wing people he calls himself. I would never call myself a “wing.” I am a moderate. BROWNE is proudly left-wing, as he has said, “I am a left-wing liberal. This nation was formed upon the principles of free and liberal rights of everyone to gather and to speak. Except when they use one of my records. For that, we realize that the Constitutional right to free assembly and free speech applies only on public land, and as the dastardly Republican are a private group, and that take-it-easy-what-the-hell-were-you-doing-during-Nam-war-lover McCain was taken prisoner, and it was a shame, mainly it was when my good stuff started coming out, and John couldn’t get the new albums at the Hanoi Hilton, a resort that in which that bastard McCain was luxuriating while I was working my ASS off writing protest songs. So where that McCain gets off using my masterpiece “Running On Empty” to mock Barack Obama I had had enough! I was going to war against the war lover!!! For what damages? Unspecified, baby. I want the judge to hit him with punitive damages so hard that he is HOMELESS – heck, I’ll even write him a song about homelessness at that point. But one step at a time: McCain, I am a pure Obama man, and how DARE YOU USE A BROWNE CLASSIC WHICH MAY CHANGE THE VOTE AND, IN TURN, THE ENTIRE COURSE OF HISTORY!

Wow. That is strong language even from that of a Newt Gingrich, and he has a few Ph.D’s under his belt. Go figure;

2) The minimum wage thing makes me ill. A person could not even afford food and clothes on a minimum wage, and the ultra-wealthy Browne, apparently naïve to the concept of minimum wage both creates an artificial market of underpaid workers and hides the REAL issue – a LIVING wage, which gets shunned aside by the überwealthy as that of a Jackson Browne. Browne has so many dollar signs and cocaine in his head that he has clearly forgotten, if he ever had a clue, that just surviving is a noble plight, as Billy Joel asserts.

All charts were synthesized on Seiko timepieces, synthesized in Microsoft Excel and completed for online presentation on a Macintosh iBook. The sound source for the recording is the CD I purchased called ‘Running On Empty’ as played on the Mac.

“Comfortably Numb” was released on the 1979 double-album The Wall. It was also released as a single in the same year, with “Hey You” as the B-side. It is one of only three songs on the album for which writing credits are shared between Roger Waters and David Gilmour – most of the music on “Comfortably Numb” was written by Gilmour, while Waters contributed the lyrics and some additional notes. “Comfortably Numb” is one of the most famous Pink Floyd songs, and is known especially for its guitar solos. In 2004, the song was ranked #314 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on now
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts,
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you say

When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am

I have become comfortably numb.

[guitar solo]

I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick.
There’ll be no more …Aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on, it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you say.

When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.

I have become comfortably numb.
