In Memory of LeRoi Moore
In Memory of LeRoi Moore

LeRoi Moore was born in 1961. As a man born in 1962, I considered LeRoi to have been the best living reed player of contemporary music – Michael Brecker has some company coming ini heaven. I believed that of popular musicians nearest to my age, LeRoi and Cart Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band were the guts of the *best* popular band in the world. I am in a hotel in Toronto – having promised myself and my wife that I would give the meanspeed music conjecture a REST for these last two weeks of August.

The exceptions to the “give your twenty year theory a its yearly two-week break” are always the same: an unexpected event. Like many of you, I heard the news from my television at 3 AM while half-asleep, awaking to “no, not after Dave’s dad, Dave’s sister, Stefan’s son.” We will all get our turn to die. We will not always be remembered with so much love and permanent contributions to the world as that of LeRoi Moore.

I know I will be listening to his recordings until its my turn to go.

Sincerely,

Ian Andrew Schneider
